Archeological site Gradina on the mountain Jelica

The position of Gradina is on the mountain  Jelica, 8 km south-west from Cacak on the altitude of 846 metres. In prehistorical, early Byzantine and medieval period, it was settled and it also served as a shelter.

Gradina on the mountain Jelica was mentioned for the first time in descriptions of Janko Safarik, pioneer of serbian archeology, from 1865. After these researches, some occasional discoveries were found on this location that nowadays are in Cacak. Unfortunately, the biggest distruction of this locality was in the middle of XX century when the stone was taken away for the construction of road Čačak-Goračići. Nowadays one part of the stone boards from this locality are presented  in the regular programme of the National Museum in Cacak.

During the government of the emparor  Justinian (527-565), in the whole empire old towns were reconstructed and new ones were built, as a defence from the attack of the barbers, Germans, Avari and Slaves.
